Barn Quilt Project
|
The Cultural Arts Council of Wilkes is undertaking the Barn Quilt Project in Wilkes County. Its purpose is to re-create quilt patterns from centuries old quilting heritage on the sides of barns. Wilkes County Quilters will play an active role in this project. Members Jo Scorof and Linda Phillips serve on the committee. Also, the Wilkes County School will be heavily involved in the Barn Quilt Project by allowing North High Art teacher, Ellen Royall the opportunity to enlist participation from her art students. No longer will the quilt patterns be for looks only, but will become a form of art. Students will learn the shapes, color wheel while incorporating math into the project. Each panel will measure 8 feet by 8 feet and will be installed in 4 panels.
ASJ Mathis Farms has been selected as the first barn site for installing a Barn Quilt. The Mathis brothers, John and Steve, recently met with several committee members to discuss the logistics and timeframe. Their barn can be seen from 421 East between exits 276 and 278 on a beautiful knoll. As additional information unveils it will be provided on the CAC of Wilkes website, www.cacwilkes.org. This project will connect Wilkes County heritage with the arts and local tourism. The Barn Quilt Project will be partially funded by Grassroots Project Grant from the NC Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The mission of the Cultural Arts Council of Wilkes is to foster, promote and increase art awareness in Wilkes and surrounding areas. Photo: Left-John Mathis & Right-Steve Mathis |
